MOUNTAIN ATTACK

Mountain Attack: „Mountain Man“ wanted

Friday after the Epiphany on 6 January, Saalbach Hinterglemm hosts the toughest challenge of them all, when participants conquer the mountain peaks in the ski resort at dusk and in the dark, competing for the title of “Mountain Man”. This is one of the hardest ski tour races of all times, first initiated by Roland Kurz in 1999. The 300 athletes who participated in the first-ever edition of the race (the goal had been to attract at least 100) have grown into more than 1,000 participants from all over the world. More than 20 nations have taken part in the Mountain Attack and the registration period shows us every year just how popular this event is. Places sell out within just a few hours after registration has opened!

The start and finishing lines are located directly on the main square in Saalbach. The starting signal is given in the afternoon, and participants set off on their 40km course up and down the pistes, overcoming more than 3,000 metres in altitude during this ski tour marathon. There are six racing categories in total, for male and female participants, and two long-distances marathon scores, with a separate score for the +45 category. A fixture of the event is the Schattberg Race, a short-distance race leading up to the Schattberg summit.

If you don’t fancy a stint in the Mountain Attack itself, you can still enjoy a great support programme:

Starting with the DJ warm-up at 3pm before the races kick off at 4pm. The races will finish around 6:30pm. To be at the heart of the action, take the Schattberg X-press cable car to the middle station or the top station free of charge after the start of the race, a special service for Mountain Attack fans. Live bands and attractions such as the tombola and of course the live reporting from the slopes will keep everyone entertained. The presentation ceremony takes place around 11pm, followed by the Attack Clubbing event that will have you partying until dawn!
